Art is important to the extent that there are a large numbers of people will visit museums and concert halls. But in essence, art is about a personal exchange, creating unique experiences. High Tech Romans

museon_hightechromeinen_affiche

The Romans - everybody has heard of them. We think of soldiers in shiny helmets, gladiators in chariots, ruins of imposing buildings, exciting films and funny comic books. But what do we actually know about these exceptional people who long ago formed an enormous empire and have continued to fascinate us ever since?

In High Tech Romans you get to know everything about Romans’ incredible achievements in the areas of architecture, waterworks, craftsmanship, geometry, military, machinery, transportation and luxury. How did they build aqueducts, temples and cities without computers? How did they rule over their empire without smartphones?

High Tech Romans shows how well the Romans were able to think up great inventions but also use other people’s ideas as a source of inspiration for new plans.

The exhibition’s design is partly modern and partly inspired by the ancient Roman world. Eleven pavilions containing 32 interactive exhibits and showcases with exceptional archaeological finds show the special role technology played in Roman society.

Activities

High Tech Romans is packed with activities. On www.museon.nl/hightechromeinen you can see everything there is to do in Museon each day!

Escher in Het Paleis Interactive

escher

Escher in Het Paleis is a permanent exhibition dedicated to the world-famous artist M.C. Escher, whose art startled millions of people all over the world. The collection is housed in the former Winter Palace of Queen Emma, the great grandmother of Queen Beatrix. It is the only public building in The Hague where the original Royal ambience of a palace has been maintained. In Escher in Het Paleis, almost all of the renowned prints of the world-famous Dutch artist M.C. Escher (1898-1972) are on display. Highlight of your visit and crown on the exhibition is the 7 meters long Metamorphosis III. Through this enormous woodcut and the non-conventional way of displaying it, the visitor actually experience Escher combining time and space as an organic unity. The art of Escher instills a sense of bewilderment and wonder, and fascinates young and old alike with his magical world.

On the second floor of The Palace is the interactive exhibition “What is an Optical Illusion?”. As well as doing puzzles with your eyes –the exhibition is about optical illusions, after all – you can also unravel some of Escher’s mysteries by yourself. The works of other artists are also on display. Escher’s ideas can be explored through several innovative attractions. For instance in Escher’s Room, which invites you to step inside the magical world of Escher and play with your height. Children appear taller than their parents, a remarkable feat that can even be captured on Photo! Very Escher and exciting is the unsteady tesselation floor. As well as these fun attractions, there are also scavenger hunts for younger children. During the school holidays, we also organize workshops for children. Please visit our website regularly for the latest news and updates.

Tourist Information (VVV) - Spui 68

 vvvgroot

The Tourist Information Office is located at Spui 68 near the city hall of The Hague, on the ground-floor of the city library. The visitor meets the tourist information bar directly after the entrance. Information is given about all the interesting touristic spots in The Hague. Furthermore there is a big shop with nice The Hague-gadgets, books about the Hague and all sorts of maps. A little piece of The Hague can be taken home.

The office is open seven days a week. Monday from 12.00 – 20.00 hours, Tuesday until Friday from 10.00 – 20.00 hours, Saturday from 10.00 – 17.00 hours and Sundays from 12.00 – 17.00 hours. The library is open on these days and hours too. Only on Christmas (25 and 26 December) and New Years’day the office is closed.

Employees of the tourist office are always available to answer the questions visitors have. But that is not all. Above the information-bar six TV-screens show permanently pictures and information about city-trips, shows, concerts, exhibitions in museums and the several leisure attractions in  the city.

On the right side after the entrance on three colorful units all kind of brochures and other paperwork can be found. This all in a style that’s typical for the tourist offices in the Hague. A wall with a picture of painter Vermeers ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ contains two touchscreens that show information and how to come (based on Google-maps) to all the touristic destinations in the city.

On the ground-floor the visitor can find hundreds of international papers and magazines. A lot of these are available in real and even more can be read online. News of the hometown is never far away.

When the visitor wants to find a little rest to process all the impressions of the beautiful The Hague, the Coffee Star offers delicious drinks and food. Seats can be found all over the place.

The Hague International Centre

 dh-international-centre

The Hague International Centre is a joint initiative between the Municipality of The Hague, the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) and ACCESS. It is the first point of contact for (new) residents of The Hague and has been created especially for the expatriate who is working and living in The Hague.

Expat information
The Hague International Centre offers a welcome package to new arrivals and forms a point of contact between individual expats and the municipality. It provides information on the services provided by various municipal departments (parking permits, marriages, registration of birth, converting driving licenses, rubbish collection etc.). The centre also supplies basic information on areas including health care and education, for example.

Welcome to The Hague programme
The Hague International Centre offers the 'Welcome to The Hague' programme six times a year. The morning is organised to help give you a better understanding of The Hague and is an opportunity to expand your network of contacts and meet other members of the international community. The best part of the programme is naturally the guided tour through the city historic centre.

Please contact us for an invitation to the next ‘Welcome to The Hague’ programme.

Residents and visitors
The Hague International Centre is not only for the international community in The Hague. Other residents and visitors to the city can come to the centre for more information about the International City of Peace and Justice. One of the facilities available is an interactive screen where you can find information about the various international institutions and organisations located in The Hague. The Hague International Centre aims to make your time in The Hague comfortable and enjoyable. We look forward to welcoming you to our beautiful city.
