But what do we actually know about these exceptional people who long ago formed an enormous empire and have continued to fascinate us ever since? In High Tech Romans you get to know everything about Romans’ incredible achievements in the areas of architecture, waterworks, craftsmanship, geometry, military, machinery, transportation and luxury. How did they build aqueducts, temples and cities without computers? How did they rule over their empire without smartphones? High Tech Romans shows how well the Romans were able to think up great inventions but also use other people’s ideas as a source of inspiration for new plans. The exhibition’s design is partly modern and partly inspired by the ancient Roman world. The collection is housed in the former Winter Palace of Queen Emma, the great grandmother of Queen Beatrix. It is the only public building in The Hague where the original Royal ambience of a palace has been maintained. Highlight of your visit and crown on the exhibition is the 7 meters long Metamorphosis III. Through this enormous woodcut and the non-conventional way of displaying it, the visitor actually experience Escher combining time and space as an organic unity. The art of Escher instills a sense of bewilderment and wonder, and fascinates young and old alike with his magical world. On the second floor of The Palace is the interactive exhibition “What is an Optical Illusion?”. As well as doing puzzles with your eyes –the exhibition is about optical illusions, after all – you can also unravel some of Escher’s mysteries by yourself. The works of other artists are also on display. Escher’s ideas can be explored through several innovative attractions.
